The district has seen an alarming increase in the rate of divorce cases as more than 5,500 cases pertaining to dissolution of marriage were filed at the court in the past 10 months with an average of 500 cases a month.
Out of the 5,500 cases filed in the family court for dissolution of marriage, more than 3,000 have been decided while the rest are under hearing.
According to a senior woman lawyer in Gujranwala, poverty, love marriages and intolerance were the main reasons behind divorces. Shakeela Saleem Rana, a senior lawyer and exsenior vice president of the Jaranwala Bar, said that the divorce rate was seeing an unprecedented increase.
She said lawyers tried their level best to convince the litigants to arrive at reconciliation.
