Kangana Ranaut believes ‘Brahmastra’ box office figures are ‘fake’

Actor accused KJo of selling lies to fans by using his influence

Keeping all Bollywood rifts aside, no feud is more polarizing than Kangana Ranaut and Karan Johar’s disapproval of one another.

The prior, who deems Alia Bhatt’s success – like most star kids’ accomplishments – to be a "product of nepotism" has once again offered her two cents on an accusation levelled against Brahmastra co-producer Johar. Johar has been accused of manipulating box office figures for his latest sci-fi film which sees Bhatt and her husband Ranbir Kapoor in lead roles.

On Tuesday, Ranaut took to Instagram to share a screenshot of a tweet by AndhraBoxOffice.com, which called the film a big failure with a worldwide box office collection of INR2.46 billion against a supposed budget of INR 6.50 billion.

Reacting to it, the Dhaakad actor wrote, “The film has been declared the biggest hit at mere 14.4 million (cost 6.50 billion). This is only to put into perspective how the movie mafia works. It's they who decide which film will be declared a hit and which will be called a flop regardless of its collections or recoveries. They choose who to hype, and who to boycott. Here they stand exposed.”

Earlier on Sunday, Ranaut shared a tweet by another filmmaker-writer, who alleged Johar’s claim of Brahmastra opening at a worldwide gross collection of INR750 million is “60-70% fake and heftily paid.” Shocked by the extent of the alleged paid promotion, Ranaut wrote, "Wow, that's a new low.”

However, as per the website Boxofficeindia.com, the Mukerji directorial opened at INR370 million in India and went on to make a total of 760 million at the domestic box office in two days. It also predicted a collection of around $ 9-10 million during the weekend.

This isn’t the first time Ranaut has attacked the Brahmastra team. On the first day of its release, she said Mukerji “burnt 6 billion to ashes,” after the film received some underwhelming reviews. She added, “People like Karan Johar should be questioned for their conduct. He is more interested in everyone’s sex life than in his films’ scripts. He self admittedly buys reviews, stars, and fake collection numbers and tickets. This time around, he tried to ride Hinduism and the south wave. This is what happens when you try to sell a lie. Karan Johar in every show forces people to call Alia Bhatt and Ranbir [Kapoor] the best actors and Ayan Mukerji a genius. Fox studio in India had to sell itself to fund this film. How many more studios will be closed because of these clowns?”
