KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday, upholding the verdict of the trial court, rejected the appeal of a convict accused of collecting extortion money for a banned organisation.

A two-member bench headed by Justice KK Agha heard the petition of Sikandar against a10-year sentence handed by a lower court in a case of extortion.

According to the police, the special anti-terrorism court had sentenced Sikandar to a total of 10 years in prison and fines. In February 2020, Sikandar and the other accused sent a letter to the clinic located in Old Vegetable Market with a contact number from Afghanistan. On non-cooperation, the accused along with his colleagues attacked the clinic and opened fire. A case against four unknown persons was registered at PIB Colony Police Station.

The accused had confessed to the crime and had told the police that the local operative of Daesh used to contact him to collect the extortion amount.

Illegal construction

An SHC bench headed by Justice Syed Hassan Azhar Rizvi issued notices to the Karachi Development Authority (KDA), the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) and the Korangi deputy commissioner for ignoring illegal constructions on an amenity plot.

A citizen has filed a petition against construction of a plaza on land allocated for a public park in the Al-Falah Cooperative Housing Society.

The petitioner's counsel informed the court that a builder, Khursheed, has started constructing a building on the public park.

The petition urged the court to retrieve the park's land from the builder's possession.
