I have a bad sense of humour: Ranbir apologises for fat-shaming Alia, says she didn't mind

Actor says he wants to say sorry to people who got offended or triggered

2022 seems to be the year of Ranbir Kapoor. From tying the knot with his girlfriend of five years, Bollywood superstar Alia Bhatt, to making a big screen comeback and later being cancelled on the internet, the actor has had a rollercoaster of eight months so far.

With his two bug-budgeted films releasing this year, Kapoor has been rather busy with promotions. But he has managed to irk many with his recent and past mansplaining of his female co-stars. The recent incident was when he fat-shamed his pregnant wife, Bhatt. The baffling remarks came off as problematic to many which propelled social media users to highlight Kapoor's casual misogyny over the years.

Now, the actor is apologising, reported The Indian Express.

The Tamasha star was at a press meet for Brahmastra in Chennai on Wednesday alongside filmmaker SS Rajamouli and his Brahmastra co-star Nagarjuna, when he was asked if he would like to clarify the comment he made about Bhatt’s weight.

"Yes, absolutely. Firstly, let me start with, I love my wife with everything that I have in my life. And what happened on that, I think it's a joke that didn't turn out to be funny. I really want to apologise if I have triggered anyone. It was not my intention. So, I want to say sorry to people who got offended or triggered. I spoke to Alia about it and she really laughed it off and she didn't mind it. But I do have a bad sense of humour and sometimes it falls flat on my own face. So, I am sorry if I have hurt anyone about it,” the Shamshera actor said.

The incident took place during a live session on social media, joined by director-writer Ayan Mukerji. Fans took the opportunity to inquire about the promotional plans for the upcoming trilogy film. As Bhatt responded that they haven’t yet “phailed [spread]” the film but will do so, Kapoor interrupted the Gangubai Kathiawadi star to quip that someone had “phailoed” instead, a jab at her growing baby bump.

In a video clip showing the moment that has now gone viral, Bhatt can be seen visibly unsettled after her husband's comment. She quickly diverted the conversation back to the film, elevating the awkward tension. However, this moment from the event has many social media users accuse Kapoor of body-shaming.
