KARACHI:

The issue of urban flooding and rainwater remaining stagnant on roads and empty plots for months is due to faulty development of the housing schemes, officials of Water and Sanitation Agency said talking to The Express Tribune.

Absence of surface drainage in many localities and poor construction or repair of the roads and streets causes rainwater and sewage to remain stagnant, they said adding that these ponds dry up only with evaporation.

"We often see partially flooded housing societies, because either these localities are some feet below the levels of the main road or there doesn't exist surface drainage," a WASA officer said requesting anonymity.

"In most localities, especially in Qasimabad taluka, both of these problems co-exist."

He explained that in most of the housing schemes the developers only construct manholes which are often raised by the local residents a few inches above the road level.
