Committee power: Energy crisis will be over ‘soon’

PM reaffirms commitment to Two-Nation Ideology

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani expressed confidence on Saturday that a ‘special committee ‘formed by him to address the power crisis would come up with recommendations which will help end the problem of power shortages in the country.


He was on a day long tour of Lahore. The main highlights of his tour of Lahore were his participation in the ground breaking ceremony of Aiwan-i-Quaid-i-Azam and the Achievement Awards ceremony of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Addressing the LCCI ceremony, the PM said that Pakistan’s exports have crossed the Rs25 billion mark which was an encouraging sign.

He said that the economy was showing signs of improvement and the financial indicators suggested that it was back on track.

He said that tax collection had increased by 36 percent over last year to a record Rs105 billion for the month of July. Talking about energy crisis, he said that government planning to import electricity and to construct new dams in order to meet demand.

The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) president Shahzad Ali called on the Prime Minister to adopt more consistent export policies so that higher export targets might be achieved in the future.

He cited energy shortage as the biggest challenge facing the industrial sector in Pakistan. He said that establishment of a state-of-the-art Dry Port in Sheikhupura by the LCCI would facilitate both importers and exporters.

Earlier, the PM, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sahrif and Governor Sardar Latif Khan Khosa participated in the ground breaking ceremony of the Aiwan-i-Quaid-i-Azam. Speaking on the occasion, the PM vowed to safeguard the country with all his strength and ability. The ceremony had been organised by the Nazria Pakistan Trust.

The PM emphasised commitment to the Two-Nation Theory which he said was the corner stone of the ideology of Pakistan.

He appreciated the decision of converting Aiwan-i-Quaid-i-Azam into a university and announced Rs50 million for the project.

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif did not address the gathering leaving the ceremony early to embark on his scheduled visit to the calamity-hit areas of Sindh where he distributed relief goods among the affected.
