Sindh Students Union Act implementation discussed

Meeting observes student unions produced educated political leadership

KARACHI:

There has been little progress on the Sindh Student Union Act passed this year in February.

The legislation lays out the regulatory framework of student unions in educational institutions, including elections, student bodies and liaison of union with the administration of the educational institutions in addition to a code of conduct.

Sindh Universities and Education Boards Minister Ismail Rahu and Chief Secretary Sohail Rajput on Thursday called on Chief Minster's Advisor on Law Barrister Murtaza Wahab.

The meeting discussed the implementation of Sindh Students Union Act in the province and various aspects related to it.

Wahab said steps have to be taken to ensure revival of student unions so that students in colleges and universities can exercise their rights. He said that colleges and universities play their role in the training of students where they are the cradle of knowledge.

He said that in the past, national level leaders have emerged through student unions as they provide political training to the students and give them a chance to raise their voice and exercise their democratic rights.

Wahab directed Chief Secretary Sindh Muhammad Sohail Rajput to remove obstacles in the implementation of Sindh Students Union Act. He directed that if more legislation is needed, it should be done immediately

Rahu said that steps are being taken to revive the student union in line with the vision of Pakistan Peoples Party.
