KARACHI:

A retired clerk of the police department is allegedly involved in blackmailing the SHOs of police stations in Korangi district and receiving weekly extortion from them.

The retired clerk is illegally performing his duty as Personal Staff Officer (PSO) in SSP Korangi's office. This was stated by SHOs and head moharrars of various police stations while talking to The Express Tribune on the condition of anonymity.

They said that Adam Memon was known in the police department as a corrupt clerk who recently retired. However, on the recommendation of an unknown official, he was made PSO in SSP Korangi's office. The police officers were also compelled to tolerate the presence of Adam Memon. They said that the retired clerk was blackmailing most of the SHOs in Korangi district on a regular basis and was receiving weekly allowance from them.

He also allegedly takes money from the head moharrars and others. He has also had fixed rates for posting check-post in-charges and head moharrars.

They said that due to the payment to the illegally-appointed PSO every week, SHOs, head moharrars and outpost in-charges were involved in giving a freehand to the land mafia operatives, drug dealers, gamblers and gutka and mawa sellers so that they can arrange the bribe money and the money to cover their expenses as well.

Korangi district also has the highest rate of crime, including street crimes, and the biggest reason was Adam Memon.

They said that the intelligence personnel of the law enforcement agencies have informed their respective agencies about the illegal activities of Adam Memon in their report. However, no action has been taken by Additional IGP Karachi and DIG East so far, which is a question mark on the Sindh Police.
