Cochlear implant surgery for treatment of children born without hearing ability will be started soon at Lahore General Hospital (LGH).
Talking to the media before an awareness walk held at the LGH on World Hearing Day, Postgraduate Medical Institute Principal Dr. Sardar Al-Freed Zafar said the facility would help rehabilitate hearing impaired children by improving their routine of life.
Head of ENT Department Dr Tahir Rasheed said on the occasion that car horns, constant noise, use of loudspeakers, musical instruments and hands-free phones affected hearing.
He said people affected by noise pollution were accustomed to hearing and speaking loudly. Those who live in such an environment for a long time do not even hear conversations on low frequency. Medical experts said that according to a conservative estimate, 430 million people worldwide, including 30 million children, suffered from hearing loss.
Terming this a matter of great concern, they called for remaining careful about hearing.
Doctors of ear, nose and throat said industrialisation, increased traffic, music and modern facilities had exacerbated the problem of deafness, but medical advances and the invention of equipment had also helped find a cure.
