PESHAWAR:

Three policemen were injured in a grenade attack on a police station in Peshawar in the wee hours of Saturday.

Police said that a miscreant hurled at least two hand grenades at Phandu police station early in the morning and managed to escape.

The grenades exploded with a loud bang, injuring three policemen on duty at the police station and causing widespread panic.

“The CCTV footage has been obtained which shows a terrorist hurling two grenades with intervals inside the police station,” he said.

“Three policemen -- a computer operator Sohail, Constable Khusro Bacha and Constable Adil -- were injured who were rushed to the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH),” he said, adding that two of them were discharged after treatment while one was still hospitalised.

Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Abass Ahsan visited the LRH and inquired after the health of the injured cop. He said that the police force was willing to render any sacrifice to eliminate terrorism.

He assured best treatment facilities to the injured constable and said that police and the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) had launched a joint investigation into the attack.

Police claimed that the initial investigation suggested that the attackers were two and probably riding a bike. One of them attacked the police station while the second one was waiting for him on his bike.

Attacks on police have registered a sudden increase since the fall of Kabul to Taliban last year in August.

Dozens of policemen have been killed in targeted attacks, ambushes and improvised explosive device blasts across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), maily in Peshawar, Charsadda, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Bannu, DI Khan and Tank.
