Few private medical universities violating cabinet rules

Pechuhu warns that all such universities will have their charter, affiliation revoked

KARACHI:

Sindh government has warned private medical and dental colleges to strictly follow the student quota and the minimum marks directives of the provincial cabinet.

The private universities that are not adhering to the policies set by Sindh will be asked to explain their position, Sindh Minister for Health and Population Welfare Dr Azra Pechuho said during a meeting with the JPMC Executive Director and Jinnah Sindh Medical University Caretaker Vice Chancellor Dr Shahid Rasool.

It was disclosed in the meeting that there are a few private medical universities that are violating the rules set by the provincial cabinet.

The meeting was also informed that the conditions set for admission based on domicile are also being ignored.

Private institutions have been mandated to set the first priority to admitting students applying from Sindh, said the minister.

These private medical colleges have a maximum quota of five per cent of students from each province and the majority of the students must be from Sindh.

Students from Sindh with 50 per cent and above marks in their PMC test must be given admission in the private medical institutions, the minister added.

She also warned that the merit list by admitting university must be followed at all cost.

Dr Pechuho said that universities and medical colleges, violating set rules, will have their charter and affiliations revoked.

Earlier in December, she had said that admission to medical colleges and universities in Sindh would be given on the basis of minimum 50 per cent pass percentage in MDCAT and Sindh domicile would be given preference in the admission process.
