South Korea’s global phenomenon Squid Game will return for its third and final season on June 27, Netflix announced during its Next on Netflix event on Thursday.
The survival thriller, which became a cultural sensation in 2021, is set to conclude its gripping narrative in its final installment.
A teaser clip showcased at the event hinted at another tension-filled sequence from within the deadly competition, further building anticipation among fans.
Created by Korean writer and producer Hwang Dong-hyuk, Squid Game follows Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, as he navigates the brutal contest designed to exploit financially desperate individuals.
The upcoming season will see him determined to bring an end to the dystopian games.
The show's first season shattered streaming records, with Netflix reporting that 142 million households had watched the series in its debut month, making it the platform’s most-watched original show at the time.
Netflix’s strong lineup of returning series, including Squid Game, Stranger Things, and Wednesday, has played a key role in boosting its subscriber base.
The fourth quarter saw a record addition of 19 million subscribers, bringing the total global count to nearly 302 million.
Beyond Squid Game, Netflix’s showcase featured several high-profile projects.
Acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is set to release Frankenstein, a long-anticipated adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel.
Academy Award winner Ben Affleck also introduced RIP, a crime thriller inspired by true events, co-starring Matt Damon.
In the comedy realm, John Mulaney is set to launch a 12-week live late-night show, Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney, starting March 12, while Tina Fey will adapt Alan Alda’s 1981 romantic comedy The Four Seasons into an eight-episode series, featuring Steve Carell and Will Forte.
As Netflix continues to expand its diverse slate of content, the final chapter of Squid Game remains one of the year’s most anticipated releases, marking the end of an era for one of the most influential shows in recent history.
