KARACHI:

A policeman trained in Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) was found using his skills for committing crimes. A squad of the Airport police station arrested three alleged robbers on Wednesday. However, one of the suspects turned out to be a constable of Special Security Unit (SSU).

The involvement of police personnel in the rising number of street crimes in the city has caused a wave of concern in the civic circles. The suspect who killed the newlywed Shah Rukh during a robbery on Kashmir Road last month over resistance had also turned out to be a policeman.

Airport police arrested three robbers Naveed alias Commando, Ali Sher and Muhammad Jabbar involved in the robbery and recovered the looted cash and digital cameras from their possession.

When contacted, SSP Irfan Bahadur said that one of the arrested suspects, Naveed Ahmed, was a police commando deployed at SSU.

Ahmed was involved in the robbery along with his other accomplices. The robbers were wanted by the airport police and other police stations in the city.

SSP Bahadur said that during interrogation Ahmed disclosed that many other policemen have taken to robbing and looting citizens, after which the police have expanded the scope of investigation while senior officers have also been informed in this regard.

The SSP further said that the arrest of the robbers took place during a joint operation of Airport Police and Investigation Police. Police are taking further action in the light of the robbers' statement and more sensational revelations are expected.
