KARACHI:

Police on Friday recovered 20 grenades from a garbage bin in Garden area. The bombs were without detonators but contained explosives.

The grenades are company manufactured and labeled RJ-69. It is to be noted that RJ-69 grenades have also previously discovered at two places last year which were also safely defused, police officers said.

The hand grenades were found in a garbage bin at Dhobi Ghat area of Garden on Friday. When contacted, SSP City Sarfraz Nawaz said that the bombs were put in a shopping bag and packed in a cardboard box.

However, the cardboard box was torn due to which the grenades got exposed, and people made distress calls to police helpline 15.

As soon as the grenades were reported, a heavy contingent of police rushed to the spot and took the bombs in custody and transferred them to the Garden Police Station. A Bomb Disposal Unit was called immediately for diffusing the bombs. The SSP further said that unidentified people who had kept the grenades in the garbage bin had removed the detonators.

Garden Police Station SHO Imdad Khawaja said that the bombs were initially seen by a ragpicker, who apprised a nearby citizen. The citizen immediately informed the police, after which the police rushed to the spot and seized the bombs. Heavy contingents of police and rangers cordoned off the area around the rubbish bin and sniffer dogs also carried out sweeping of the area.
