Renowned educationist Professor Raees Alvi passes away

He had been suffering from cancer for some time and was being treated at a hospital in Sydney

Renowned educationist, linguist, critic, poet and former registrar of Karachi University  Professor Raees Alvi has passed away at the age of 76 in the Australian city of Sydney.

He left behind a son and a daughter in his family and many loved ones. He will be buried in Sydney on Thursday after his funeral prayers.

Professor Raees Alvi moved to Australia with his son a few years ago. He had been suffering from cancer for some time and was being treated at a hospital in Sydney.

Professor Raees Alvi was born on May 7, 1946, in Lucknow, India. He passed matriculation from Shia school Lucknow and after the partition of India, he moved to Pakistan and continued his education in Karachi.

He graduated with his Master's Degree in Linguistics and Literature from the Department of Urdu, Karachi University in 1965. He taught at Siraj-ud-Daulah College, Karachi from 1965 to 1984. He also held the position o  Registrar Karachi University for four and a half years from December 2005 to June 2010 during the tenure of Dr Pirzada Qasim.

Later, he also served as the Rector of Khadim Ali Shah Bukhari Institute of Technology (KASBIT) and Newport Institute. Professor Raees also held the post of Secretary of Sindh Boy Scouts twice in 2006 and 2009.

He co-authored several works with Professor Suzuki Takeshi of Japan, including Urdu-Japanese Daily Conversation, Gul Saadberg, Chand key Char Rang (poetry translation), Ghazal Nama and Sada Ubherti Hai.

Professor Raees has also been instrumental in the field of education and scouting in Sindh from primary to higher education. He has also made significant contributions in the field of education and scouting in Sindh from primary to higher education.

He was also the creator of the draft law of the charter inspection and evaluation committee, a body that chartered private universities in Sindh, and was the convener of the committee.

Vice Chancellor of Karachi University Prof. Dr Khalid Iraqi, Controller Examinations Zafar Hussain, Registrar Private Institutions Sindh Rafia Mallah, Deputy Director Akhlaq Ahmed and others expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved.
