KARACHI:

Devastated by a fire that burnt billions of rupees worth of dresses and shop fixtures in the commercial hub of Saddar, traders and shopkeepers seek government assistance to come out of colossal losses.

Saddar Cooperative Market traders representative Muhammad Feroze said on Monday they were expecting help and compassion from Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and Sindh government.

The owners have suffered irreparable losses and have come on the streets in poverty, he said addressing a press conference. The traders demanded that a committee be formed on the incident of horrific fire in the cooperative market.

Meanwhile, CM Murad Ali Shah has said that a survey was under way to assess the damages caused by a fire at the Co-operative Market.

However, Karachi Administrator Murtaza Wahab has said that if there was a fire safety system in every office or shop, institutions would not have been blamed.

Sindh Minister for Trade and Industry Jam Ikramullah Dharijo said that electricity wiring should be secured in markets. Incidents of short circuit in congested markets continue to cause unfortunate incidents, he said.
