Billie Eilish reveals losing 100,000 followers for stepping out of baggy clothes
Billie Eilish, who’s known to transform her appearance every now and then while keeping her baggy layers intact, recently revealed she lost 100,000 followers on Instagram after shedding those layers.
After she shared a photo in a corset, the singer told Elle that her fans started un-following her for apparently becoming “disingenuous.” Many even said "the industry really changed [her],” in the comments section of her Insta post.
On July 11, the Grammy-winning artist had posted a series of selfies wearing a Miaou tomato-print corset with a lace bra peeking out. Eilish has been stepping outside of her baggy clothes, which kept her curves covered. Her June 2021 Vogue issue marked the first time the Bad Guy crooner shared photos showing skin.
In response to the criticism, however, Eilish told the outlet, "People hold on to these memories and have an attachment. But it's very dehumanising.” The Lovely singer, as previously reported by Insider's Callie Ahlgrim, has often encouraged people to normalise "real bodies" after being photographed wearing tighter clothing in 2020.
In a 2019 Calvin Klein ad, Eilish had said her signature baggy clothes were, in part, a strategy to avoid judgment. "Nobody can have an opinion because they haven't seen what's underneath," she asserted. Many of the lyrics in her latest album Happier Than Ever also tackle the sexism and double standards younger women in the spotlight face.
But despite losing 100,000 followers over a single post, Eilish's Instagram still boasts a hefty 92.7million subscribers, till the filing of this report. She has not entirely abandoned her baggy fashion choices either, and has since shared several photos in oversized shirts, pants, jackets among other articles.
According to Complex, Eilish also explained that she sometimes shows skin out of pragmatism. “The other day, I decided to wear a tank top. It wasn’t even a provocative shirt. But I know people are going to say, ‘she’s dressing sexy and trying to make a statement.’ No, I’m not, it’s 500 degrees and I just want to wear a tank top.”
She also opened up about being judged for swapping her neon green roots for a platinum blond bob. “I had no goal of ‘This is going to make everybody think differently of me.’ I’ve had different-coloured hair and vibes for everything I’ve ever done. I just wanted this album [Happier Than Ever] to have its own thing.”
