ISLAMABAD:

Terming the Earthquake Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Authority (ERRA) report pertaining to uplift work in quake-hit areas as “unsatisfactory”, the Supreme Court has ordered relevant authorities to submit pictorial evidence of all the projects to the court.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmad heard the case regarding reconstruction of schools in quake-hit areas.

During the hearing, the CJP inquired about the date when ERRA was founded on. Upon which the ERRA chairman informed the court that it was established on October 24 in 2005.

Concluding the ERRA report nothing more than an “eyewash”, Justice Gulzar inquired why wasn’t the construction of 540 schools completed and where did the funds released for this purpose go.

He said ERRA did nothing to help the affected people and instead the public donated their personal savings to help them.

Expressing his anger over the matter, the chief justice inquired about how Rs205 billion allocated for earthquake affectees along with international grants was spent and why schools are still operating under the sky without any roof that were supposed to be built within two years.

On the occasion, Justice Mazhar said extortionists were demanding money from the contractors, forcing many of them to abandon their work and flee.
