KARACHI:

The Gulistan-e-Jauhar Investigation police arrested a senior member of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) and his team for taking 65 tolas of gold from an alleged thief in settlement of setting the suspect free.

According to sources, Sub-Inspector Mumtaz Ahmed, ASI Israr Ahmed, ASI Muhammad Imran, Constable Asif, Shoaib and Shaukat are among the arrested policemen. Suspect Javed, however, is at large and raids are being conducted for his arrest.

According to the sources, a housemaid had allegedly stolen 80 tolas of gold from Muhammad Irfan’s home on June 24 in Gulistan-e-Jauhar. The report of gold theft was lodged against the housemaid at the Gulistan-e-Jauhar police station.

Meanwhile, the SIU personnel got whif of the case and even though the case was not assigned to the team, took the woman into custody. Using the time-tested police tactics, they succeeded in making her confess and also identify where she had kept the loot.

Instead of turning her over to the law, the rogue cops took the gold and set her free. Later when the Gulistan-e-Jauhar investigation police arrested her she said that she had already made the settlement with SIU. During the interrogation, she told the police that SIU personnel had taken the gold she had stolen and never arrested her.
