ISLAMABAD:

A delegation of the key leaders of the PML-Q – one of the allies of the ruling PTI in the Centre as well as in Punjab province – met Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday.

The delegation – comprising Punjab Assembly Speaker Pervaiz Elahi, Federal Minister for Housing Tariq Bashir Cheema and MNA Moonis Elahi – discussed with the premier the political situation in Punjab, said the sources privy to the meeting.

Topics like the provincial budget, “smooth” conduct of the Punjab Assembly proceedings during the budget debate and construction of new Punjab Assembly Building also came under discussion.

The participants agreed that the two parties must make collective efforts for the progress and prosperity of the country’s biggest province.  Minister for Foreign Affairs Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Minister for Planning Asad Umar and Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood also attended the meeting.

Separately, the premier met with National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser to discuss legislation with regard to electoral reforms. According to sources, the PM tasked Qaiser to play an effective role in introducing vote reforms in consultation with opposition parties.

The premier praised the speaker for playing an effective role in getting the Finance Bill 2021-22 passed from the National Assembly. He also acknowledged his role in reducing the tension between the treasury and opposition benches. The premier and the speaker also discussed proposed changes in the law governing the top graft buster, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
