ATC sends JSQM leader, 30 others on remand

Court handed out the jail term and imposed a penalty of Rs80,000 on him

KARACHI:

An administrative judge of the anti-terrorism court (ATC) granted the police on Thursday four-day physical remand of Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM) leader Amjad Mahesar and 30 others in the case pertaining to vandalism during the protest against Bahria Town.

The arrested workers and leaders of nationalist parties were produced before the court.

The court accepted the police's request for physical remand and sought a progress report at the next hearing.

Separately, an ATC awarded 17 years of imprisonment to a man convicted in robbery, attempt to murder and police encounter cases.

The case was heard at the anti-terrorism complex in Karachi Central Jail.

After finding Kashif guilty, the court handed out the jail term and imposed a penalty of Rs80,000 on him.

The prosecution had argued that Kashif was caught red-handed by the police while committing a robbery in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. He had looted a citizen, Hassan Salman Rizvi, last September and opened fire on the police when they reached the site, according to the prosecution.
