Capital deserted as people leave for hometowns

Residents complain of being held hostage inside homes

ISLAMABAD:

The capital city wore a deserted look on Sunday as citizens who are natives of other areas have left for their hometowns earlier to celebrate Eidul Fitr due to the closure of inter-city public transport.

On the other hand, those who have their own transport are also leaving for their native towns, taking advantage of the nine-day-long holidays.

The hustle and bustle of the city has vanished after the closure of markets and public transport to ensure citizens’ protection from the deadly virus.

“I am proceeding to my hometown, Bahawalpur, prior to closure of public transport, to visit my parents and celebrate Eid,” said Fatima Sohail.

Another resident said, "Eid is a very important festival for us as we get to spend more time with our parents after remaining busy with work in other cities,” said Amina Yusuf.

She added that Eid is the only occasion we find time to visit friends but most of them have left the city.

She was of the view that although the steps being taken to stop the spread of coronavirus is appreciable, it has made Eid colourless and we feel we are held hostage at our own homes. She maintained that the long holidays will give people enough time to spend with their families.

It is a routine for many residents living in Islamabad to leave for their hometowns on Eid to celebrate with their loved ones. However, this Eid, markets, public places and other recreational points in the capital have been closed to protect citizens from Covid-19, which has further added to the city’s deserted look.

“Every public place and recreational spot is closed so we are restricted to our homes, but these measures are for the larger interest as nothing is important than one's health,” said Ejaz Ahmed.

He stated that we must keep our kids engaged in home-based activities, curtailing outside interactions to the maximum level for safety during the holidays. APP
