KARACHI:

Jamaat Islami (JI) Pakistan assured the residents of Baldia Town of providing clean drinking water in the area on Sunday.

The impoverished constituency of NA-249 has been neglected by successive governments, but JI will change its fate, claimed JI chief of Karachi chapter Naeemur Rehman.

The rulers do not consider Karachi a part of Pakistan, but are only interested in amassing wealth from the port city that generates revenue for the federal and the provincial governments, he said, leading the "Rights for Baldia Town Rally," as part of the party's NA-249 by-election campaign.

Rehman said the purpose of running the "Rights for Karachi Campaign" is not only to win elections but also to solve the problems of the citizens.

At the time of by-elections, all parties are coming to Baldia Town. After April 29, no party other than JI will remember Baldia Town, said the JI leader. JI will continue its struggle for the rights of the people of Karachi even during Ramazan, he claimed.

Rehman said that the tanker mafia is ruling in Baldia Town. The people of the area are also deprived of clean drinking water due to the connivance of tanker mafia and government officials.

He said that the people should know that these are the same people who have taken the citizens of Karachi, including Baldia Town hostage. Rehman claimed that these were the same rulers, who did not correct the Karachi census results. They have usurped the legitimate and legal rights of the citizens of Karachi, he said, adding that the rulers did not properly represent the people of Karachi in the Council of Common Interests. As a result of Karachi's fake census, citizens have been deprived of their legitimate rights, he added.

Rehman demanded that a census be conducted immediately and transparent local body elections be held in Karachi. He directed the workers to organise the youth and provide positive activities and make the youth a part of JI's Rights for Karachi movement.

Apart from the JI Karachi chief, Fazal Ahad Hanif and other party leaders also addressed the rally.

The participants held banners and placards and shouted slogans like give Karachi its rights, give electricity to Baldia, give water, give education, and give health. The rally started from Hub River Road and had participants riding on motorcycles, buses and trucks.
