Nickelodeon renews ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ franchise

Studios will be creating content based on animated series

Avatarverse has finally returned to our screens after 13 years with the final episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender (ATLA). The production house for many animated series, Nickelodeon has launched Avatar Studios to create new content based on the Airbender series and The Legend of Korra, reported Entertainment Weekly.

The first project is expected to begin very soon, as the studios have lined up a theatrical animated film. ATLA continued for three seasons, from 2005 to 2008, on Nickelodeon. The story revolves around young monk named Aang as he masters the four elements and endeavors to save his separated world from the callous Fire Nation, with help from his friends.

The unique storyline featuring native Asian culture has won several awards ever since it launched 16 years ago. The series also shed light on dark subjects such as imperialism and misogyny. Both The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra have reemerged on social media ever since they came on Netflix.

The creators, DiMartino and Konietzko of the upcoming series, had backed out from streaming service’s take in August, as they lost control over creativity and ideas.

The studio’s content will debut on platforms including Paramount plus, ViacomCBS subscription service – Nickelodeon’s own digital platforms and in theatres.
