LAHORE:

Lahore High Court’s Justice Faisal Zaman Khan had imposed a fine of Rs500,000 over the filing of a 'frivolous application' challenging the fixing of tariff of the utilities in decimal digits.

“It has to be kept in view that sacred and narrow scope of public interest litigation (PIL) is not a magic wand which can be given in the hand of a reckless adventurer who in order to gain publicity can file frivolous petitions, which if entertained will cause chaos and unrest amongst the institutions as well as general public," the order stated.

“The petition being frivolous and malicious in nature is dismissed" with Rs500,000 as exemplary and special costs for misusing the jurisdiction of the court and wasting time, it added. The fine has to be deposited in a medical centre established by the Lahore High Court Bar Association within seven days. In case the amount is not deposited within the prescribed time, it shall be recovered from the petitioner as arrears of land revenue.
