A conveyor belt vehicle collided with a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) aircraft at the New Islamabad International Airport (IIA) after the driver lost control of the vehicle due to a health issue.
The bottom wing and body of the aircraft were damaged in the accident along with sustaining damages to its second engine, a spokesperson confirmed on Monday.
According to the initial investigation, the driver of the baggage tractor fell unconscious due to low blood pressure, owing to which the accident occurred. Sources in IIA told The Express Tribune that the PIA aircraft was parked after landing from Abu Dhabi when the tug van rammed into the airplane.
Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) teams rushed to the site and shifted the driver of the lorry to the trauma centre. After being given first aid, he was shifted to a private hospital.
CAA began a probe into the matter while a PIA team will also investigate the matter, sources said. The teams will record testimonies of the workers present on the site while also taking help from the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage.
