FMD surveillance to get more stringent

As per the agreement, the FAO would provide at least 24 million doses of FMD vaccine to the livestock department

Punjab Livestock Secretary Captain (retd) Saqib Zafar has said that disease surveillance system should be made more effective to control foot and mouth diseases (FMDs) in animals. He said this while presiding over a steering committee meeting at the Livestock department on Friday pertaining to prevalent FMDs in animals. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Special Representative on FMD Dr Muhammad Afzal attended the meeting and briefed the secretary about the agreement between the authorities and FAO to control inflictions. As per the agreement, the Food and Agriculture Organization would provide at least 24 million doses of FMD vaccine to the livestock department. Speaking on the occasion, Saqib said that the project was of high importance owing to government’s initiative of setting up foot and mouth disease control zones. He also said that the vaccine storage system was being made more efficient at the division and district levels.
