Bollywood shares two cents on Delhi unrest

All of India was busy celebrating Republic Day on Tuesday when a peaceful protest by farmers in Delhi took a violent turn. The tractor rally had entered into the capital and hoisted their flags at the Red Fort when the protestors and police personnel clashed in several parts of the city. Due to the riots, mobile services were suspended across Delhi as well.

Soon enough, photos from the protest went viral, earning reactions from Bollywood stars like Taapsee Pannu and Swara Bhasker, amongst many others. Celebrities immediately voiced concern on their social medias, reacting to the situation in the country, reported India TV News.

Veere Di Wedding actor Swara Bhasker tweeted, "It is not right to hoist anything other than the Tricolour on the Red Fort. There is no religion. Those who will defend this act, what will they be able to say when someone flaunts another coloured flag here?!" Bollywood veteran, Sunny Deol agreed with the tweet from Bhasker.

On the other hand, Thappad star Taapsee Pannu also reacted to the violence. "These two news items, back to back on my timeline, explain so much about the state of affairs in our country." Malhaari famed singer and music composer Vishal Dadlani added, "Does it make sense to you? Farmers who protested peacefully for so many months, even in the face of police violence, suddenly turned violent today? Why? Just doesn't compute. Plus, we've seen those in power do this before. Typical play: Send violent stooges, discredit movement."

Queen’s Kangana Ranaut has also voiced her opinion on the matter multiple times ever since last year. She shared a video of the farmers protesting and said, “We have become a joke before the world today. We have no prestige left. We don't care if the Prime Minister of another nation is our guest, we can sit naked in front of them. If this goes on, there will be no progress in this country. Whoever supports this so-called farmers' protest should be jailed. They have reduced our nation, its government and our Supreme Court to a joke."

Numerous other celebrities also responded to the incident, condemning it. "Undesirable turn of events. I have supported this peaceful protest from day one. However this violent turn is condemnable. And, on this sacred day, only the Tricolour should fly aloft the Red Fort," tweeted former beauty queen Gul Panag.
