ISLAMABAD:

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases continued to surge in the federal capital as 166 new patients were reported during the last 24 hours, a National Command and Operation Centre spokesperson said on Wednesday.

He shared that as many as 118 cases were reported on Tuesday while 155 cases were reported on Monday. A total of 37,556 cases have been reported in the capital so far with 415 cases resulting in deaths while 33,253 patients have recovered, he added.

Meanwhile, on the directives of the Ministry of National Health Services, the Islamabad Capital Territory Administration continued a smart lockdown to reduce transmission of the virus in selected streets of certain sectors.

An official shared that inspection teams of the authority also began taking strict action against any violations of the standard operating procedures related to the virus while inspecting marriage halls and marketplaces. Notices have been issued to marriage halls besides imposing fines on owners of different shops in this regard, he added.

The official advised the citizens to continue social distancing and use of face masks to combat the virus in the city.
