At least 149 Sindh police officials contract Covid-19 in five days

So far, 22 police officials have died due to Covid-19 and 465 are undergoing treatment, says police spokesperson

As many as 149 Sindh Police personnel, including officers and ranks, contracted the coronavirus during the last five days, pushing the number of infected police personnel to 4,084, said a spokesperson of the Sindh Police on Tuesday.

“So far, 22 police officials have died due to the virus and at least 465 were undergoing treatment,” the spokesperson added.

The spokesperson added that at least 3,597 police personnel had recovered from the virus and were in good health. He further said that essential steps were being taken daily to ensure proper care of the personnel who have contracted Covid-19.

“The officers and ranks, who served as the vanguard against coronavirus, are extremely committed and enthusiastic to serve humanity,” the spokesperson said further.

Pakistan recorded 1,704 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 460,672. In the last 24 hours, the virus claimed 82 lives, as the country's death toll jumped to 9,474.

Earlier, in June, Karachi AIG Ghulam Nabi Memon issued directives for an isolation centre to be set up at the Sindh Police Hospital in Garden, in order to treat police personnel infected with Covid-19.

Ensuring implementation of SOPs and other directives during the pandemic, police personnel have been on the forefront in the fight against the virus. For the most part, officers have remained on duty without being provided personal protective gear.
