Businessmen being harassed: Mandviwalla

Urges them not to be scared of govt authorities

Senate Deputy Chairman Saleem Mandviwalla has said that he has received hundreds of complaints from businessmen from all over Pakistan who have been victimised by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Speaking at a webinar organised by the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) on Wednesday, he said these businessmen were being approached by NAB as they carried out business with people currently being investigated by the bureau.

“The business community should not be scared of government authorities and come forward to highlight NAB’s harassment,” he said.

Mandviwalla advised all business chambers to encourage their members to forward cases of harassment by NAB officials to the office of Senate deputy chairman so it could help resolve them with NAB.

“Inconsistency and changes in policies have always been a problem as amendments are either implemented through the federal budget or throughout the year, which create a challenging environment for the business community,” said Mandviwalla.

“Therefore, all chambers and trade associations must unite and make collective efforts to effectively deal with issues being faced by the entire business and industrial community.”

Speaking on the occasion, MNA Ahsan Iqbal underlined that the private sector held the key to progress for any nation.

“Economies are increasingly dependent on foreign direct investment as well as private investment,” he said. “Unfortunately, Pakistan has not been able to harness the true potential of both of these.”

He stressed that the economy would never flourish if the private sector remained shy of investing in the country.

“We are now living in extraordinary times which demand a paradigm shift,” he said. “The whole model of business is undergoing fundamental changes and industrial revolution principles, developed 300 years ago, are becoming irrelevant as knowledge economy emerges as a tool for wealth creation.”
