Syed Geelani calls for shutdown on youth's death

Kashmiri Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani has called for a shutdown in Kashmir in protest of the demise of 26-year-old Mohammad Rafiq Bangro.

Bangro was in a critical condition after being injured in an altercation with paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)personnel.

All groups in Kashmir have agreed to the shutdown. Locals term such incidents as torture by Indian government.

Hurriyat Conference members said the shutdown is meant to draw international attention to human rights abuses by forces in Kashmir. Shops, businesses, schools, colleges and government offices are closed while public transport is off the roads.

Bangro was severely beaten up by CRPF officials outside his home on the June 12.
