At least five members of a family were killed on Gojra Motorway while travelling from Lahore to Layyah after their car collided with a tractor trolley.
A man, his two sons and another couple were killed, while an eight-year-old boy was seriously injured in the accident.
The bodies were handed over to the heirs after completion of legal formalities.
Police seized both the vehicles and started search for the tractor driver who had fled from the scene after the accident.
Muhammad Imran, 35, a resident of Chowk Azam Layyah, planned to leave for Libya and his family went to see him off from the Lahore Airport in a car. They were told that Imran’s flight to Libya had been delayed for four days.
The family members were going back from Lahore to Layyah on the motorway when the driver fell asleep and the car collided head-on with the tractor on the motorway M4 near Chak No 350GB. The car was badly damaged in the collision.
Imran, his 25-year-old brother Muhammad Irfan who was driving the car, father Muhammad Issa Khan, 50-year-old uncle Muhammad Yaqub and 40-year-old aunt Zainab Bibi, wife of Yaqub, died on the spot.
Mohammad Imran’s eight-year-old son Mohammad Ali was seriously injured and was shifted to Allied Hospital in a critical condition.
Upon receiving the report of the accident on the motorway, the police rushed to the spot. The five bodies were handed over to the heirs of the deceased after post-mortem.
When the corpses reached Chowk Azam, an atmosphere of mourning spread in the locality.
Gojra Saddar police seized both the vehicles and started searching for the fleeing driver.
Speaking to The Express Tribune, SSP Motorway M4 Chaudhry Ata Muhammad Gujjar said that the accident had occurred due to the drowsiness of the driver.
“This is the first accident on the M4 motorway since June,” he said. “Previous accidents have occurred for varying reasons,” he added. “The tyres of some vehicles exploded and the drivers fell asleep while driving in other instances,” said Gujjar.
He highlighted that high-speed motorists are heavily fined, therefore, accidents due to speeding are almost impossible.
