The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Lahore arrested a former inspector (BPS-16) of the Punjab Excise and Taxation Department (E&T) on Thursday. The accused, Khawaja Waseem, was wanted by the authorities in an ‘assets beyond income’ case. During the raid, a hefty amount of approximately Rs330 million in cash and prize bonds was recovered from the possession of the accused. As per the investigation carried out by NAB the accused had amassed huge wealth and assets disproportionate to his known sources of income while in office as a public official. Waseem was also found as the owner of properties and bank accounts worth Rs227 million. Moreover, Rs191 million cash and prize bonds were registered in his wife’s name. Reportedly, he had also availed an amnesty scheme in 2018 despite not being entitled to it as a public official. The authorities also discovered Rs221 million worth of foreign remittances transferred to his bank accounts during 2013-17. After obtaining sufficient evidence, a NAB Lahore team arrested Waseem and acquired his 14-day physical remand after producing him before Accountability Court Lahore.
