The Pakistan Navy’s relief operation in rain-hit areas of Karachi and Sindh is underway and PN teams are providing cooked food, drinking water, ration bags and medical assistance to distressed people in various areas.

The Emergency Response Teams of Pakistan Navy carried out search operation at Korangi Causeway to recover bodies of the drowned people. Aerial survey of affected areas was also carried out to locate and evacuate stranded families.

The Pakistan Navy teams distributed cooked meals and clean drinking water amongst thousands of rain-affected families of Surjani Town, Nazimabad and other troubled areas of Karachi and Sindh's Sujawal district.

Medical assistance was also provided by Pakistan Navy mobile medical teams to a large number of people confined at their houses due to extensive flooding in the areas.

Emergency response teams along with necessary equipment including excavators and trucks have been mobilised to assist filling the breach at Mirpur Bathoro.

The Pakistan Navy resolves to continue its relief operation and extend all-out support in areas of extensive flooding in Karachi and Sindh, according to official statement.

On Thursday, at least 23 people were killed in rain-related incidents, including drowning, structural collapse, electrocution and other mishaps, in Karachi.

“It has never rained so much in the month of August, according to our data,” the country’s chief meteorological officer, Sardar Sarfaraz, told Reuters, adding that the data went back to 1931, 16 years before Pakistan gained independence from Britain.

More than 500mm of rain had fallen this month, 230mm on Thursday alone, according to the Met office.

The heavy rainfall also resulted in massive traffic jams in parts of the city due to flooded roads.

Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, during a press conference on Friday, said that the torrential rains in Sindh have claimed at least 80 lives, 47 of those belonged to Karachi.

Prime Minister Imran Khan is due to visit Karachi on Friday and unveil ‘Karachi Transformation Plan’.
