KARACHI:

A local court handed over on Wednesday two accused to the police for a single-day physical remand in a case pertaining to throwing an infant girl from the second floor of a building in Manzoor Colony the previous day.

The police presented the accused, who were the mother and grandfather of the baby, before the court.

The investigation officer (IO) informed the court that the mother, Najma, had confessed to throwing the infant from the building. Najma told the court she did not know why she threw the child.

The court remarked that it was a serious case and should be investigated properly.

The IO, upon being asked about the baby's condition, informed the court that the infant had recovered from her injuries and was in the custody of a welfare organisation.

The court handed over the accused to the police on a single-day physical remand and directed the police to arrest the baby's father, who had gone into hiding, as well.

The infant, who had reportedly sustained an injury to her right eye, had been found on the street on Tuesday. She was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment and was later moved to a shelter home run by Chhipa Welfare Organisation.

According to the organisation’s Ramzan Chhipa, the baby had been thrown from the building’s second floor and fell on a shade above one of the shops.

The police subsequently registered a case against Najma, her father and a man who is allegedly the infant’s father. According to the police, Najma had the child out of wedlock, and the baby was thrown from the building right after her birth.
