ISLAMABAD:

The appointment of the chief executive officer (CEO) of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) was challenged on Thursday. A single-member bench of the Islamabad High Court (IHC), comprising Chief Justice Athar Minallah heard a petition filed by Javed Iqbal against the appointment. During Thursday’s hearing, the counsel for the petition contended that DRAP Chief Executive Asif Rauf has been occupying the post for the past 18 months. Iqbal contended that his appointment violated Section 5 of the Drug Regulatory Act 2012 (under which DRAP operates). The lawyer said that the appointment of the authority’s CEO was the discretion of the federal government and that the court term the notification issued in March 2019 as null and void. The court subsequently issued notices to the federal government. The Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) was also sent a notice to attend the next hearing in the case. The next hearing of the case will be conducted after 10 days.
