‘Preemptive’ drain cleaning under way

KARACHI:

With heavy rains predicted to hit the province from Monday (tomorrow), the Sindh government has decided to clean nullahs in advance in order to protect lives and valuables of the people, claimed Sindh Information and Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah on Saturday. Reviewing the performance report of the ongoing campaign to clean nullahs - inaugurated by him on Thursday - Shah stated that the Sindh chief minister had allocated a special grant for the task under the district municipal corporations. The minister further stated that given the importance and time-sensitive nature of the task, the World Bank, on the CM’s request, had issued large amounts of funds for the purpose. He added that the provincial government would ensure transparency as contractors would be paid after the work’s completion. Shah further said that all stakeholders involved were on the same page regarding the matter and every possible step would be taken to ensure public safety.
