PESHAWAR:
The Peshawar police on Wednesday suspended four cops, including the head of the Tehkaal police station, after a video emerged showing cops stripping naked a youngster and then torturing him.

Meanwhile, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister Mahmood Khan and the inspector general of police have also taken notice of the incident.

A waiter at a marriage hall, who had taken to drugs and drinking in wake of the situation created by the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, was asked by some friends what will he do if the police arrived at that instant. Intoxicated, the youth abused police officers.

Later, police allegedly picked him up and filmed him as they stripped him naked and beat him. That video went viral on Tuesday evening causing huge uproar online.

K-P Chief Minister Mahmood Khan took notice of the incident and sought an inquiry report into the incident.

Sources in the CM House said that per the report, the brutal actions of the police were due to directions issued by a senior police officer. The source added that action will be taken against the officer responsible.

When contacted, Peshawar SSP Operations confirmed that four officials involved have been suspended, including Tehkaal SHO Imranuddin.

North Waziristan MNA Mohsin Dawar on his Twitter account expressed his shock at the incident.

“Should verbal irreverence towards police high-ups be responded with such torture and humiliation? Under which law? I demand immediate action and investigation against the officials involved in this shameful act,” he had said.

Members of the opposition Awami National Party (ANP), the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and other lawmakers strongly condemned the police excesses and demanded exemplary action against them.
