Punjab Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid ordered on Monday a detailed inquiry into the demise of Dr Salman Ali Iftikhar at the Services Hospital, Lahore.

The minister directed Specialised Healthcare and Medical Education Department Secretary Barrister Nabeel Awan to conduct a complete inquiry into the death of Dr Iftikhar.

The provincial minister said that strict action will be taken if any negligence during the treatment of the late doctor is found.

Meanwhile, Services Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS) Principal Dr Mehmud Ayaz condoled with the family of late Dr Iftikhar.

He added that, as per information available, the late doctor, a postgraduate resident of Punjab Institute of Cardiology, was admitted to SIMS surgical emergency department on the night of June 3 in critical condition with high fever, abdominal pain and respiratory problems over three days.

He was given emergency treatment which stabilised his condition for a short while but it worsened again and on reporting improvement, surgery was performed.

After the operation, he was put on ventilator in the ICU. However, he could not survive and breathed his last three days afterwards, on June 7.
