ISLAMABAD:
The apex civic agency of the federal capital has decided to build a flyover on the Sihala-Kahuta Road which will allow traffic to by-pass a railway crossing on the thoroughfare.

Documents for the project have been submitted to the government for approval.

In this regard, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has prepared a project concept-1 (PC-1) for the bridge and dispatched them to the federal interior ministry.

The document further shows that the bridge will be constructed over the Sihala railway crossing which bisects the Sihala-Kahuta Road. The crossing is a source of chronic traffic congestion.

One end of the flyover will be located at around six kilometres from Kakpul on the Kahuta Road.

The PC-1 for the project shows that the bridge will cost an approximate Rs483 million to build and that it will be funded by the government through the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP). The specifications listed for the bridge show that it will be 548.64 metres (1,800 feet)-long. Moreover, it will have an approach road that will be 274.32 metres (900 feet) long.

The CDA has set a 12-month deadline to complete the project.

CDA officials, while discussing the project, said that locals had been demanding the construction of a flyover on the road because of chronic traffic problems on the thoroughfare.

They further said that once constructed, the flyover on the Sihala-Kahuta Road will significantly improve the flow of traffic on the road and will make the lives of motorists commuting over it significantly easier.

Earlier this year, the CDA started work on an underpass which will connect Sector G-7 with Sector G-8, allowing motorists to travel between the two sectors without having to come on to Faisal Avenue.

The Faisal Avenue underpass was approved in 2015 but work could not start on it. Keeping in view the importance of public utility projects and to make practical workable possible, the incumbent management of authority reviewed the project and approved its PC-I and further decided to resume all stalled projects which have been pending for many years.

Last year, after completing all the codal formalities, the CDA’s development working party had reviewed and approved the project and decided to extend the project’s construction period; however, it was emphasised that the cost of the project will not be increased as well as the change in location.

CDA-DWP approved the construction of the underpass at a cost of Rs351 million.

In the light of this decision, the incumbent management invited bids and after fulfilling all formalities, a contract was awarded to the firm which submitted the lowest bid.

Once construction started in February, it was hit with delays owing to the novel coronavirus (Covid-19).
