Two road crashes claim 11 lives

A total of 11 people were killed in traffic accidents in Faisalabad city and its vicinity

SHEIKHUPURA: At least 11 people, including five members of a family, were killed in two accidents involving a bus and a van in Sheikhupura and Khanewal districts on Sunday.

Five members of a family were killed and 10 other people injured when a van overturned due aftre its tyre burst on the motorway near Kala Shah Kaku in Sheikhupura.

Rescue officials said the occupants of the van were on their way to attend a wedding from Babkawal to Farooqabad when it overturned on the Sialkot Motorway near Kala Shah Kaku Interchange. Two children and three women died on the spot. The 10 injured people were provided medical assistance. After the rescue operation, the motorway police restored traffic on the motorway. Rescue officials said the bodies had been handed over to the police.

The deceased were identified as 35-year-old Shadia Bibi, her two daughters named five-year-old Asia and eight-year-old Mehwish, 39-year-old Zeba and eight-year-old Samiullah.

Most of the injured are women and children, some of whom are said to be in critical condition.

Meanwhile, at least six passengers were killed and 32 others injured as a bus overturned near Pull Rangu, Khanewal, in the morning.

Rescue 1122 officials said the bus was on its way to Bahawalpur via Multan from Shakar Garh when it overturned as the driver tried to save a motorcyclist.

The critically injured passengers were shifted to Nishtar Hospital in Multan, while others were admitted to the Khanewal District Headquarters Hospital and Kabirwala Tehsil Headquarters Hospital.

The deceased were identified as four-year-old Danial, son of Imran, Adil Saeed, son of Saeed, Taimoor, son of Khalid, Shahbaz, son of Siraj Din, Najibullah, son of Hakeem Khan and Zikaria Begum, wife of Bisharat Ali. The injured included Gulshair, Waqar Khan, Rehman Ali, Amjad, Mohammad Tauqir, Mohammad Hafeez, Basit, Salman, Waqar Ali, Sakhi Ahmed, Ali Gul, Samina Bibi, Uzma Bibi, Robina Bibi, Qasim, Abdul Rehman, Attiya Bibi.

Doctors of local hospitals were called on duty on the orders of the deputy commissioner. Assistant Commissioner Shabbir Dogar visited the Trauma Centre to enquire after the health of the injured. He also reviewed the treatment facilities being provided at the hospital.

The accidents come a few days after seven members of a family, including two women and three children, were killed when a car hit a dumper truck on a motorway in Muridwala, Faisalabad.

Muhammad Ikram, a resident of Kasur, was returning to the town along with his family after meeting his relatives in Bahawalpur when the tyre of his car exploded near Chak 312GB and it collided with the dumper.

A total of 11 people were killed in traffic accidents in Faisalabad city and its vicinity during the Eid holidays, while 300 people were injured. During the Eidul Fitr holidays last year,  21 people were killed in traffic accidents in and around Faisalabad, while about 350 were injured.
