Instagram announced it is integrating Facebook’s video chat feature, Messenger Rooms with its app allowing users to add 50 people to participate in a call.

Facebook recently introduced Messenger Rooms, capitalising on the surge in demand for videoconferencing during the coronavirus pandemic.

Messenger Rooms will display a tiled layout of participant videos up to 16 on desktop and 8 on mobile resembling the design offered by competitor Zoom.

The new feature allows users to start a call through Instagram but will redirect to Messenger for the actual video call.

Here is a breakdown of how you can start an Instagram video chat with Messenger Rooms:

First head to ‘Direct’, the small arrow you see on the top right corner.

Then tap on the video icon in the top right corner, proceed to select ‘Create a Room’, and then tap the Create Room option.

Further, choose up to 49 friends and hit ‘Send’, now tap ‘Join Room” to be redirected to the video chat you have created.

You could also lock the Messenger Room if you wish to limit who can access the chat.
