SC tells food dept to consult Sindh High Court

Sindh govt had filed petition for payment of Rs30m by two flour mills

KARACHI: The Supreme Court's Karachi registry disposed on Thursday the petition filed by the Sindh government against two flour mills for the payment of Rs30 million as markup, directing the provincial food department to consult the Sindh High Court (SHC) on the matter.

A three-member bench, led by Justice Maqbool Baqar and comprising Justice Faisal Arab and Justice Muneeb Akhtar, was hearing the case.

The state prosecutor maintained that the Khairpur and Ranipur flour mills had to pay Rs30 million in markup.

The counsel of the flour mills, however, informed the bench that the high court had given a verdict that the flour mills had already paid the markup, while the food department was demanding an additional payment of the said amount in the name of interest.

The apex court directed the food department to approach the SHC, and wrapped up the case.

Bail granted

Separately, the same bench approved the interim bails of the former assistant district education officer Akbar Rahimo and others in a case pertaining to illegal appointments in the education department in Mithi.

The bench granted interim bail to the accused against a surety of Rs500,000.

They had been charged with appointing 45 employees with fake degrees in the education department.
