Wrongdoing: Excise Department explains

Regarding a report captioned “Tax secy removed, faces corruption charge” that appeared in The Express Tribune on July 24, a spokesman of the Excise and Taxation Department has said the following: The Motor Transport Management Information System was a project of the Punjab Information Technology Board and not the E&T Department. The E&T department made no purchases for the project and did not sign the deal with the courier company. Further, the chief minister’s orders about a third party audit, received on June 6, 2011, were conveyed to the PBIT on June 7. The Excise Secretary had no role in setting up the DHA Motor Registration Office which was established by the relevant district office Excise, Region ‘C’ of the City District Government of Lahore. Rs.5.7 million was paid by the CDGL in rents for two years and not Rs10 million by the E&T Department for three years.

The Express Tribune wishes to point out that E&T Department is a party in the MTMIS and the contract with Speedex, that there has been no third party audit of the project and that the excise secretary approved setting up of the DHA Motor Registration Office.
