Amid the growing number of coronavirus cases in Punjab, the provincial authorities have decided to close all shopping malls, commercial centers and tourist sites for two days across the province.

Chief Minister Usman Buzdar, flanked by Health Minister Yasmeen Rashid, announced the decision while addressing a press conference in Lahore on Saturday.

"We want people to stay in their homes [for two days] because this is the only way we can stop the spread of coronavirus," he said.

Punjab has so far reported 96 cases of COVID-19, taking the nationwide tally to over 600.

The decision which has been taken in line with the social distancing measures will take effect from Saturday (today), said the Punjab CM.

However, he clarified that the grocery stores, pharmacies and other essential services will remain open.

"The notification in this regard will be issued soon which will make the directives more clear," he added.
