Imran wants plan to meet challenges of energy, petroleum sectors

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday reiterated that the common man would not be made to bear the brunt of inefficient and corrupt system that had been in place for years and was not delivering.

“Years of corruption and inefficiency have weakened the foundation of the system. The emergency situation requires out-of-the-box measures,” he said.

The premier expressed these views while presiding over a meeting to review the measures taken for improving the efficiency of the state-owned institutions.

PM Imran called for designing an emergency programme to meet the challenges of the energy and petroleum sectors and directed the authorities concerned to ensure that the process of reformation put minimum burden on the common man.

The meeting was apprised of the administrative reforms introduced in subordinate departments of petroleum and energy ministries, increase in revenue collection and measures taken to improve the overall performance of these departments during the last 18 months.

The participants were also briefed about the problems faced by the ministries of petroleum and energy as well as the proposals under consideration to address those issues.

The premier observed that the current government had been taking measures on emergency basis from the very first day to address the issues faced by the energy sector.

He called for running a public awareness campaign to take the masses into confidence about the steps taken by the government and bring those involved in power and gas theft to justice with the help of the people.

He noted that mere administrative changes in the ministries would not be enough and stressed on the need to hire the services of professionals and technical experts at every level in the ministries of petroleum and energy.

The meeting proposed to hand over the policy, regulation, implementation, and matters pertaining to finance and administration in the ministries to professionals of the concerned fields so that every office bearer could perform his duty in the best possible manner.

The premier directed for linking the performance of every institutional head with the achievements of their targets.

The meeting was attended by Minister for Energy Omar Ayub Khan, Minister for Planning Asad Umar, Minister for Privatisation Muhammadmian Soomro, Minister for Aviation Ghulam Sarwar Khan, Adviser on Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, Adviser on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Petroleum Nadeem Babar and other senior government officials.
