PFA continues operation against tainted milk

Food authority shut down 24 food points and served notices to over 200 food business operators

LAHORE: The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) continued a crackdown against milk adulteration mafia in different parts of the city for a second consecutive day on Friday, discarding 4,600 litres of tainted milk.

Separately, the food authority shut down 24 food points and served notices to more than 200 food business operators for bringing improvement as per the PFA Act.

PFA Director General Irfan Nawaz Memon said that the action is being taken to control the wicked practice of adulteration in food upon the special directions of the prime minister and the chief minister.

‘Pakistan’s milk production does not meet needs’

He added that dairy safety teams have inspected 17,500 milk items by placing screening pickets on the entry and exit points of the city till late night. “During the inspection, teams disposed of 115 maunds of milk being carried on different vehicles for supplying in the provincial metropolis from dairy farms.”

He highlighted that PFA disposed of adulterated milk over proved contamination of water, hazardous powder and other chemicals which have been used to enhance the thickness and quantity of milk. “Adulterated milk is injurious to health for consumers especially children and elders.”

Milk is being inspected on a daily basis to ensure the provision of adulterated-free milk, he explained. “Adulterators are destroying our generation through adulteration in staple foods such as milk.”
