KARACHI:

Top-seed Aqeel Khan clinched the Aisamul Haq Masters Championship men’s singles title when he defeated his younger brother Jalil Khan 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) in the final yesterday.

Pakistan number one took an hour and half to register the win and bag the Rs500,000 prize-money, outclassing the second-seed in a one-sided first set. However, he faced resistance from Jalil in the second set but sealed the result with a 7-4 win in the tie-break.

“This tournament is a trend-setter,” Aqeel told The Express Tribune. “They kept a big prize-money for this event and it shows that the sponsors are willing to take tennis ahead if they see Aisam’s name attached to it. It’s going to benefit the players and will motivate others to start taking up tennis professionally instead of a recreational activity.”
