QUETTA: Unidentified assailants gunned down a man and injured a woman in the name of ‘honour’ in Balochistan’s Jhal Magsi district on Tuesday, police said.

Authorities say the incident took place in Goth Safarni area, where armed men opened fire at the couple. The man was killed on the spot while his companion sustained serious bullet wounds.

The body and the injured were shifted to a nearby hospital, where the injured woman is said to be in a critical condition.

After the medico-legal formalities, the dead body was later handed over to the family.

Police officials said the armed men managed to escape after committing the crime. An investigation has been launched to bring the culprits to book, they added.

According to Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) reports, on average 650 cases of ‘honour’ killings occur annually in the country over the past decade. But since most go unreported, the real number is likely to be much higher.
